In September 2013, Irritech started the installation of a 650-ha Greenfield Drip Irrigation scheme for AVIV Ltd, a subsidiary of OLAM International. This was phase two of Aviv’s project to develop a 2000-ha plantation of Arabica and Robusta Coffee, in the foot hills of the Livingston mountains in Southern Tanzania, 60Km south of Songea.
The scheme involved the instillation of an 8m x 8m pontoon barge pump station, pumping water from the river into a new dam built on the farm.
Water is then pumped from the main pump station below the dam wall, through two filter banks and three booster stations, into the 100 individual coffee blocks.
Working through the rainy season, Irritech managed to finish the instillation in less than 10 months, finishing the instillation by June 2014. Over 2000 KM of drip pipe was installed along with over 120 KM of PVC. Three years later, the coffee is over 1.5m tall and flourishing.
